Motivation to learn a language is an act of the will. Some language learners make the mistake of equating motivation with enthusiasm. For them, when their enthusiasm is up, their motivation is up. But enthusiasm is an emotion.  It ebbs and flows in relation to how you feel, or how the world is treating you. In reality, motivation is not an emotion, so don’t tie it to your emotions.
Motivation is a determination which results in a decision of the will -”I will learn.”" The “I will” is far more important in language learning than the “I.Q.” (Your aptitude is fine since you already speak English like a native.) .

What does a child language learner know about language learning that enables him to successfully learn a language virtually on his own ?

Successful language learners – both children and adults – begin with an underlying knowledge that a language is learned rather than taught. And they know how to take advantage of the abundant resources available to them. These resources are the people who speak the language.

In general, successful language learners learn a little and use it a lot. They get what they need, and practice it, and then use it in actual conversation with people. They also spend time in reflection – consolidating their gains and identifying new felt needs – which in turn leads them to get and practice more material which is then also used. You were once a child and this is the way you learned your first language.

These steps of getting, practicing, using and evaluating are probably employed spontaneously by all successful language learners. We call these four steps a Learning Cycle.

• Pour se saluer, c’est-à-dire pour se dire bonjour ou au revoir, on se serre la main, surtout quand on est présenté à quelqu’un (quand on fait sa connaissance). C’est appropié dans un contexte professionnel.
• Dans un contexte amical, les hommes se serrent aussi la main, alors que les femmes s’embrassent plus facilement (parfois même dans le contexte professionnel).
• A l’intérieur de la famille, on s’embrasse. Dans tous les cas, le nombre de baisers / bises / bisous varie d’une région à l’autre, mais on fait deux, trois ou quatre baisers sur la joue.

Remarque: Embrasser signifie faire un baiser ( faire la bise à quelqu’un) et non pas prendre dans les bras.

Some translation for those new to French:

• se saluer = to greet one another
• c’est-à-dire = that means
• se dire = say to each other
• se serre la main = to shake each others hand
• est présenté à quelqu’un = to be introduced to somebody
• amical = friendly
• s’embrassent = to kiss each other on the cheek
• baisers = kisses
• faire un baisers = make a kiss, kiss somebody
• la joue = cheek
• prendre dans les bras = hug (take into the arms)
• enchanté = delighted
• vous connaître = to know you
